Staithes

Staithes is about 10 miles north of Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast. The harbour is protected by two huge cliffs, Cowbar Nab to the north, Penny Nab to the south.

Ash cottage is located in the heart of the ancient fishing village. It’s a fantastic location for walking – the Cleveland Way passes our front door. Staithes is also famous for its art. The Staithes Group of painters worked here over 100 years ago, and the village attracts a lot of artists today – some visitors, some residents.

Eight years ago, the Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage sparked renewed interest in art in the village, and quickly became an annual fixture with thousands of visitors over a September weekend. Cottages become galleries – with over 100 venues. The 2020 festival is cancelled due to Covid-19, but no doubt will be back.
